Seven Christian Classics for Middle Schoolers
Several of these books are household names. What most families don't know is how much Christian content was cut from the modern editions. Generations publishes them with that content restored, alongside a missionary biography and two lesser-known novels that belong on any Christian family's shelf. The set is built for readers around ages 11 to 14, whether they read on their own or listen as a family.
What's in the set
Heidi by Johanna Spyri
An orphan girl is sent to live with her gruff grandfather in the Swiss Alps. Her joy and simple faith change the people around her, and readers learn about prayer, forgiveness, and God's purpose in hardship. Christian content cut from most English editions has been restored, some of it directly from the original German.
Hans Brinker by Mary Mapes Dodge
In a poor Dutch family, Hans and his sister Gretel care for a father disabled by a severe injury. When Hans learns a cure may be possible, he works to raise the money and enters a race for a pair of silver skates. A story of contentment and sacrificial love, set in the Holland of canals and windmills.
The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
A shipwrecked family builds a new life on a deserted island and learns to see God as the Provider of everything they have. Wyss was a pastor who wrote the story to teach his own sons the Christian faith. This edition restores much of that original narrative.
The Pilgrim's Progress for Young Readers by John Bunyan
A simplified edition of Part 1 of Bunyan's 1678 allegory, made by Generations for readers ages 11 to 14. Christian's road from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City introduces young readers to one of the most widely read books in history.
Sir Gibbie by George MacDonald
A mute orphan boy grows up on the streets of a Scottish city, then flees to the Highlands. Through his story, MacDonald shows how God humbles the proud, lifts up the humble, and gives His people the strength to love their enemies. This edition softens some of the harsher language of the villains, but parents may still want to preview it.
Titus: A Comrade of the Cross by Florence Kingsley
Written for an 1894 contest seeking the best book to strengthen a child's faith in Christ, Titus won and quickly sold hundreds of thousands of copies. It follows a young man whose life crosses paths with Jesus, and shows Christ's compassion for sinners.
The Life of Henry Martyn
First published in 1832 by the American Sunday School Union. Martyn served as a missionary in India, translated Scripture for the people there, and completed a Persian New Testament before dying at 31. Extracts from his journals and letters let young readers see his heart for Christ firsthand.
